A corsage or boutonniere for your Prom date is a very important part of the Prom tradition. Prom flowers, for him and her, are a special way of showing your respect and consideration for your partner. Prom flowers can be extravagant or simple, expensive or affordable, no matter what – Flowers are special.
Usually girls buy a boutonniere for their dates. It may be a pin-on rose to be worn traditionally on the right lapel. You can order this at the same time your date orders your corsage. It is customary for the boy to buy a corsage for his date. It can be a pin-on type, or one she can wear around her wrist. Some even buy a modified bouquet that a girl can carry in her hand. It is a good idea to know what colour dress your date is wearing so that the corsage you choose doesn’t clash. Some couples like to go together and choose the prom flowers.
“Boutonniere” means “buttonhole flower” in French. Around the 1700’s, men’s coats became less military style and developed a loose, open collar. This allowed for the top buttonhole to be unused and folded over to one side. Hence the free buttonhole became a perfect place to insert a decorative flower arrangement and the “boutonniere” was born. Now, in the 21st century, men prefer their prom boutonniere to be “pinned” to their left lapel as a complement to their date’s prom corsage.
